June 10, 2010 – Zocalo – The city square of Mexico City. This a popular tourist place. Janet Benevidez accompanied us. She is a single senior sister also serving in the temple. She is from Las Vegas. We saw the large Cathedral that was built over ancient pyramids. Mexico City was built on a lakebed so many of the buildings are sinking on one side. The pendalum shows the amount of sinkage. This is one of those. We also saw the foundations of other mostly destroyed pyramids.
Notice the blue clubs in their hands. When Ammon in the Book of Mormon cut off the arms of the Lamanites who were steeling King Lamoni's sheep. The knives on the sides are very sharp. This type of weapon may have been like the one Ammon used.
The President’s National History Museum has a whole floor of murals painted by Diego Rivera depicting the history of Mexico. The murals were larger than life size and very interesting. I got a couple of good pictures. The gardens in the area were relaxing. There were a couple of plum aria trees in bloom.
The main post office building houses the Oficino de Corero a functioning post office. Even the outside of the building was made of gold colored blocks. The inside had polished metal in gold. We could see up three floors. It was very ornate and beautiful. The picture doesn’t do it justice.
At the National Museum of Fine Arts there were carved would statues of 12 Apostles. We have a picture of just one. Sister Benavidez is wearing the orange blouse. The inside was of polished marble. At the bookstore I found a hand Atlas in English to go with the city map I found at the cathedral. When it got hot we came home.
June 11, 2010 Fri. It is our laundry turn. I put the first load in at 7:30 and finished by 10 am. It makes for a busier day. Elder Cardon came over to see if we were interested in going to Walmart. He hurried and got ready to go with them. It’s a short Taxi ride. We were able to pick up a few things. Sister Cardon has purchased three Barbie doll and two baby dolls for the Temple Nursery. They need clothes. I am attempting to make patterns and a few clothes. Next Mon we are having a craft day and that will be one of the projects. I need to be sure the patterns fit so the day will be productive. I was able to get some of the supplies for that project.
For supper the Becks went with us to the famed TacoLoco for “real” Mexican food. It is favorite place to eat by the missionaries here. Since we were all sick last weekend from the food we ate at Tula we have been reluctant to try food away from home. It was really good. It is only a short walk from the temple and it had cooled down by the time we left so we had a comfortable walk.
