On Nov 2nd, the Day of the Dead, the family bring the dead's favorite food and this is how it may look when it is set out on the grave. They light candles and some spend the night at the grave site.At the end of Allende street if you turn right at the cemetery and go a short distance you will find shanty town. Sister Benavidez had given service there for a member of the Church who no longer has been attending. She took us there. These first two pictures are of that area.
This is the cemetery on the west end of Allende, our street. We went there Nov 1, 2010 on our p-day. Nov 2 is actually "The Day of the Dead," but it was our only chance to visit the cemetery. Allende street was filled with vendors all the way from our apartment to the end. Many of the vendors were selling marigolds and a few other flowers. There were those selling food, and pottery as well. It felt more like a fiesta not somber as you would think. This was in honor of Elder Beck's 66th birthday. He requested the cemetery visit and to shanty town.
